CFIA Comes Under Scrutiny For Beef Profitability

Mar 15/10 - A cattle buyer says consolidation in the Canadian beef industry is largely due to the regulatory environment. Rick Wright with Heartland Order Buying Company says large American companies like Tyson Foods are pulling out of Canada. He says Tyson's decision to sell its plant in Brooks is proof processors are finding it difficult to operate in Canada. He notes American giant JBS Swift showed very little interest in the plant, while it was "lucky" that XL Beef stepped up to buy it. Wright believes the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has too much power and certain regulations have hurt the profitability in the business.
