Impaired Driving Charges Continue To Rise: MHPS

Mar 19/10 - The number of arrests for impaired driving in Medicine Hat continues to skyrocket.  Medicine Hat Police Inspector Murray Morton presented the statistics at Thursday night's Police Commission meeting.  He says in the first two months of 2010, they have picked up 78 impaired drivers, with 41 in February.  As well, Morton says there were no less than nine arrests made on St. Patrick's Day Wednesday.  Police Chief Andy McGrogan commented that nine in one night was "unheard of".  The service is now examining ways to increase education levels about the dangers of drinking and driving.  They say the message doesn't seem to be getting through.  One potential action is to hold a public forum to discuss the issue.
